I've purposely waited over a month to review my purchase. I have to say, this Netbook has exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs on-the-go computing power for under $300. I made two changes to the original configuration. First, I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. Starter works well for most needs, but I found some of the limitations annoying. Because my student status, I was able to purchase the upgrade cheaply through Microsoft's student program. Also, I added an additional 1 gigabyte of memory, but I haven't seen it make a big difference in performance. A lot of people complained about the size of the keyboard. To be sure, it took me a week or so to get used to it, but now typing is just as easy as it is on my regular laptop. Of course, for users that are doing a lot of typing (e.g. more than 1 hour at a time), then for ergonomic reasons, I would connect an extended USB keyboard. The battery power varies depending on the applications I am running. I find that streaming movies tend to draw down the power faster, so that on average I get between 3-3.5 hours of battery life. For everything else, my battery lasts between 7-9 hours, which is lower that the advertised 11 hours--I'm not sure how they came up with this number. In any case, that's enough to get me through the day and then some. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. Barring any failure, Asus has won me over as a new customer.

Physically, a nice little machine, great for work on the go. I have fairly big fingers, and made a lot of typos at first, but my hands got accustomed to the keyboard within an hour or so. But there are buts.
The big one is that, while it does a few things faster than my main Vista-based laptop, for many of the most basic maneuvers it's a slow as molasses and crashes regularly, even though I've doubled the memory to its maximum 2gb. My hunch is that Windows 7, which the 1001p comes with, is another bust from Microsoft, so loaded down with security and other features of no use to anyone that it needs a nuclear power plant to run it. You can go for a 5-mile run between hitting the scroll bar and the page actually scrolling down!
Soon as I'm back from my current trip and not dependent on this netbook, I'm going to try replacing 7 with xp and see if that improves things.



Asus 1001P-MU17-WT Review by Will (Army, All over)

Bought this computer to watch movies on.
Can't stand iTunes + the iPad is too expensive. Android Tablets are also way too expensive for the decent ones, the cheap ones are way too buggy.

Since I had a legal copy of win7 pro (64bit) I put it on the machine. Had to download the wireless and video drivers, pretty easy. Lost the special EEE buttons, (under the "F" keys), so I'll have to go find whatever driver runs those. Right now I have to manually click the volume and screen brightness up/down, can't turn the wireless card off, and can't put the computer to "sleep" (only options are turn off or hibernate.)

"Express Gate" is FAST. It boots up and is ready to surf in a few seconds. You really can't do anything with it, to save pictures or whatnot from the internet you have to install an SD card or USB drive. Which is nice- should be virus-free, right? It's NOT IExplorer, it's "Splashtop" by Mozilla (makers of Firefox).
You can view attached drives and open pictures but not movies.

Keyboard feels CHEAP. Size is good, but it's noisy and it flexes a little bit.

Watching a little Hulu (wireless) and a 2GB mpeg video (USB drive)- they played just fine in fullscreen with a tiny amount of pixelation, IF the machine is not trying to do anything else. Try to turn the volume up/down and it gets a tiny bit choppy until I'm done and let it do its thing.

I love this thing, it will keep me happy on trips, although I'll still be packing my laptop for long ones to download/rip/convert movies. (And the wife wants one, just cuz they're "so cute I want to put it in my purse".)

Would I like a nicer/more expensive one?
-Of course! The finish on the $330 machines I've seen are far superior.

But this is a great machine for the pricepoint. Only complaint (for the price) is the keyboard. It's completely functional but could be a little quieter and more solid.

About half the time I plug a harddrive into the left USB port, the entire computer shutdown. Different cables, harddrives all do the same thing. Doesn't happen on the right-side. Emailed Tech Support, they said "no problem, use the other side" But I like my mouse on the right side and don't need harddrives hanging where I use that. Plus I don't want a computer that's not fully functional.

I emailed tech support back, I have to call to setup an RMA to ship it back. Will update as things progress.

(Disappointing because battery life rocks, plays my media from USB, SD card, or Harddrive fine, even plugged into the TV using a monitor cable. I actually use this in the house because it's so much easier to carry from room to room than my regular laptop..)
